WASHINGTON – Martin Makary, MD, MPH, a member of the National Academy of Medicine (NAM), was confirmed by the US Senate as Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration.
Makary was elected to the NAM in 2018 in recognition of his role in “creating the surgery checklist, leading pioneer studies on frailty, minimally invasive surgery, and procedure-specific opioid guidelines, creating metrics of high-value care, and leading national efforts on health care costs that addressed pricing failures, surprise billing, drug price transparency, and vulnerable populations.”
Currently, Makary is a professor of surgery and chief of Islet Transplant Surgery at Johns Hopkins. Islet transplantation involves inserting cells from a donor pancreas into the liver to boost insulin production. Makary is the author of New York Times bestselling books on health policy, Unaccountable and The Price We Pay. He writes frequently for the Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal.
He is the recipient of the Nobility in Science Award from the National Pancreas Foundation, which recognizes individuals who demonstrate compassion, dedication, innovation, and leadership in the care and treatment of patients with pancreatic diseases. Makary has served as a visiting professor at more than 25 medical schools.
