Promoting Success: A Professional Development Coaching Programs for Interns in Medicine

Published in the Journal of Graduate Medical Education, this study examined a program to support intern professional development through positive psychology coaching. Researchers designed, implemented, and evaluated the program, which was created to establish a safe environment for interns to reflect on their performance, honestly discuss their professional development, and identify and understand how to optimize their strengths to overcome challenges and stressors. The study provides early evidence that a coaching program with faculty trained in positive psychology may advance intern development and partially address burnout: 94% of the interns rated the coaching program as good or excellent, 96% of the interns would recommend this program to other residency programs, and the experience of burnout was lower in this cohort compared with a prior cohort.
