Published in Annual Review of Medicine, this article highlights what studies have shown about duty hours during residency affect fatigue, alertness, mood, and patient safety. It also furthers the discussion on evidence-based effects of continuity of care and continuity in clinical education as measures of patient and resident outcomes. Specific areas for research are highlighted and recommendations for national policy are offered.
