The Mental Well-Being of Prison Nurses in England and Wales

The following study, published in the Journal of Research in Nursing, highlights some of the key issues currently affecting the mental well-being of nurses working in prison. Furthermore, the nationally funded study shares our experience of the value both of clinical supervision and action learning in providing a supportive environment for those working with prisoner patients. The study finds reflection on- and in-practice and clinical supervision can play a significant part in providing staff with a mechanism through which to address and ensure their mental well-being. We suggest that engaging in reflective practice and clinical supervision can effectively support nurses in managing their emotional labour thereby promoting mental well-being. Where successful implementation of clinical supervision is yet to occur, the study suggests action learning can provide a useful and effective solution to both development and implementation.
