The Impact of Complaints Procedures on the Welfare, Health and Clinical Practise of 7926 Doctors in the UK: A Cross-Sectional Survey

This study, published in BMJ Open, aimed to investigate the impact of patient complaints on physician psychological welfare and health. The authors also aimed to assess whether exposure to a complaints process is associated with defensive medical practice. Doctors in the United Kingdom were invited to complete an anonymous survey. The study found that doctors with recent or current complaints have significant risks of moderate or severe depression, anxiety and suicidal ideation. Additionally, most doctors reported practicing defensively, including avoidance of procedures and high-risk patients. Suggestions to improve complaints processes included transparency and managerial competence.
