Stress and Well-Being of Junior Doctors in Australia: a Comparison with American Doctors and Population Norms
The following study describes compares stress levels of junior medical officers (JMOs, analogous to interns in the US) to predecessors, American surgical residents and population norms. JMOs in 2014 reported better overall mental health compared to American surgical residents, Australian JMOs in 2009, but worse than the general population. Data analyses also indicated higher career anxiety may lead to higher stress and lower mental health outcomes. While the comparisons illustrate improvement in stress levels and overall mental health, the risks are still prevalent and should be addressed in education and training.
