Single Item Measures of Emotional Exhaustion and Depersonalization are Useful for Assessing Burnout in Medical Professionals
Published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine, sought to evaluate the performance of two questions relative to the full Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) for measuring burnout. Researchers evaluated the single questions with the highest factor loading on emotional exhaustion (“I feel burned out from my work”) and depersonalization (“I have become more callous toward people since I took this job”) domains of burnout in four large samples of medical students, internal medicine residents, internal medicine faculty, and practicing surgeons. Results indicated that the single item measures of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization provide meaningful information on burnout in medical professionals. The results suggest that these single-item measures may be useful substitutes for the assessment of burnout when the full MBI cannot be implemented.
