Reducing Emotional Distress in Nurses Using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: A Preliminary Program Evaluation
Published in the Japan Journal of Nursing Science, the following study evaluates the effectiveness of a 1-day stress management program on nurses’ stress levels. Cognitive behavioral therapy reduced nurses’ work stress, stress outside of work, and overall stress. Nurse Stress Scale scores showed reduced doctor-and nurse, and nurse-nurse conflict and improved coping with death and dying. The workshop was well-received by the new graduate nurses. The pre/post findings suggest a beneficial effect of the intervention. The authors now plan to conduct a multisite, randomized controlled trial to seek to establish a wider evidence base for the intervention.
