Recommendations from the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) Taskforce on Women in Academic Emergency Medicine

This report, by the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM), was written with the intention to create a document for the SAEM Board of Directors that defines and describes the unique recruitment, retention, and advancement needs for women in academic emergency medicine. The Taskforce and authors review the literature to highlight key data points in understanding this issue and make recommendations for individuals at four levels of leadership and accountability: leadership of national emergency medicine organizations, medical school deans, department chairs, and individual women faculty members. If meaningful change does not occur to redress gender-related inequities, new women faculty will encounter the same problems and leave for the same reasons, thus creating a cycle of short retention and necessitating the implementation of appropriate strategies.
