Qualitative Study of Burnout, Career Satisfaction, and Well-Being Among US Neurologists in 2016
This qualitative study, published in Neurology, sought to identify drivers and mitigating factors of burnout and well-being among US neurologists. The researchers examined free text comments from the 2016 American Academy of Neurology survey of burnout, career satisfaction, and well-being. The results characterize burnout among US neurologists through respondents’ own voices. Erosion of professionalism by external factors was a common issue. Neurologists mentioned workload, professional identity, and time spent on insurance and government mandates when describing burnout, and many neurologists chose to reduce work hours and call provision and had considered early retirement.
