Professional Identity (Trans)Formation in Medical Education: Reflection, Relationship, Resilience

The following commentary in Academic Medicine discusses professional identity formation (PIF) as a fundamental goal of medical education. The author provides an overview of foundation principles of PIF supporting the being, relating, and doing of work of a compassionate and competent physician, including guided reflection, use of personal narratives, relationships and role modeling as key aspects of growth, and a cohesive community of practice. The author also provides question informing a PIF-centered course, including lessons for both learners and faculty.
