Potential Impact of Burnout on the US Physician Workforce

This study, published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings, is a prospective, longitudinal analysis of burnout and payroll records to summarize the potential impact of physician burnout on the physician workforce. Findings from the study indicate that higher emotional exhaustion is associated with an increased likelihood that physician will reduce their professional work effort. The burnout observed in U.S. physicians between 2011 and 2014 likely translated into approximately a 1% reduction in the professional effort of the US physician workforce. This is equivalent with the elimination of the graduating class of 7 US medical schools.
