Cultivating Cultures of Compassion

This letter to the editor of Academic Medicine explains that while professional identity formation is vital, pedagogic advances (i.e. spaces for reflection and innovative curricula) must be accompanied by a culture of compassion to help sustain empathy throughout the undergraduate and graduate medical education system. This may be done by attending to the hearts of faculty members, seasoned clinicians, and hospital administrators and fostering their recognition of shared suffering with learners.
