Breaking Silence, Breaking Stigma

In the following commentary from the National Academy of Medicine, a young physician chronicles how leadership at a medical student is studying ways to enhance work-life balance, relieving the pressure to perform according to unforgiving metrics, and expanding access to mental health resources. The author contends that medical resident may be able to play a role in bringing thei own suffering out into the open. The author asserts that while continuing to expect confidential mental health services, residents should at the same time foster a culture that embraces open conversation about experiences with depression and other mental illnesses.
