New Article Spotlights Success in NAM Efforts to Diversify Membership

Each year, the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) elects 100 new members whose varied specialties, areas of research, and backgrounds strengthen the organization’s capacity to provide broad expertise on pressing issues. A new paper published in JAMA Health Forum, “Adapted Choice Architecture and Diversity in the NAM,” explores the NAM’s efforts since 2008 to improve diversity among newly elected members and highlights successful outcomes. The paper is authored by Robert Phillips (Executive Director, Center for Professionalism and Value in Health Care, American Board of Family Medicine); Se Kim (Jane E. Henney Director of Membership and Governance, NAM); and Elena Fuentes-Afflick (Chief Scientific Officer, Association of American Medical Colleges, and NAM Home Secretary). Phillips and Fuentes-Afflick were both elected to the NAM in 2010. Phillips is former chair of the NAM Membership Committee.
