NAM Member Awards Descriptions
The NAM Member Awards were established in 2000 in honor of the outstanding contributions of its members. The three awards are named in honor of Walsh McDermott, Charter member of the NAM and one of the moving forces leading to its establishment; Adam Yarmolinsky, another Charter member of the NAM and primary author of the Academy’s Charter and Bylaws; and David Rall, an outstanding committee chair and an early Foreign Secretary of the NAM.
Criteria
The Walsh McDermott Medal will be awarded to a member of the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) in recognition of distinguished service to The National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine (The Academies) over an extended period of time. Such service would include leadership roles as an officer, councilor, committee chair, committee member, reviewer, board member, fundraiser, or other such contributions that have enhanced and furthered the mission of the NAM. Service on committees of The Academies and jointly sponsored activities such as the Committee on Human Rights, Committee on Science, Engineering and Public Policy, or Government-University-Industry Research Roundtable shall be included as relevant contributions.
The Adam Yarmolinsky Medal is awarded to a member of the National Academy of Medicine from a discipline outside the health and medical sciences — for example, from fields such as the social and behavioral sciences, law, public policy, and administration. It recognizes distinguished service by a member who, over a significant period of time, has contributed in multiple ways to the mission of the NAM. Eligible nominees may not have a health professional degree, regardless of their scientific field or scholarly contributions. The Adam Yarmolinsky Medal was not conferred in 2010, 2011, 2014 and 2021.
The David Rall Medal will be awarded to a member of the National Academy of Medicine who has demonstrated particularly distinguished leadership as a chair of a study committee or other such activities in a manner that was particularly exemplary, demonstrating a commitment substantially above and beyond the usual expectations of a committee chair. (Nominators must identify specific exemplary attributes of the committee chair’s work in their nomination.)
Selection Criteria
The NAM Member Awards Committee which include the chair (NAM Home Secretary) and five NAM members who will review all nominations and select the award winners. The committee suggestions will be submitted to the NAM Council for approval. Announcement of the award winner will be released in October 2022 in conjunction with NAM’s Annual Meeting.
