What Stops Physicians from Getting Mental Health Care?

Dr. Dinah Miller’s paper posits that the intrusive questions asked on licensing forms deter physicians from asking for help. ‘Having a mark’ on physicians’ records in some states can be a detrimental risk for having a license suspended or revoked. Furthermore, it can be stigmatizing when hospitals assess physicians for malpractice insurance. The dearth of evidence suggesting that these questions improve patient safety means we should re-evaluate our licensing requirements and hospital policies to better care for the caregiver.
