Validation of Single-Item Screening Measures for Provider Burnout in a Rural Health Care Network
Waddimba’s research, published in Evaluation & Health Professions, validates three single-item measures for emotional exhaustion (EE) and depersonalization (DP). The Physician Work-Life Study’s single-item measure correlated with EE and DP. Furthermore, in multi-variable models, it predicted high EE (not low EE or high/low DP). In multi-variable models, the emotional exhaustion single-item predicted high/low EE, whereas the depersonalization single-item predicted only low DP. Therefore, the three single-item measures tested varied in effectiveness as screeners for EE/DP dimensions of burnout.
