Using Behavior Change Plans to Improve Medical Student Self-Care
This study, published in Academic Medicine, describes an innovative approach to teaching medical students the principles and practice of health behavior change and self-care. The Healthy Living unit followed by completion of a Behavior Change Plan (BCP) project involved setting goals, tracking progress, and assessing one’s own success. Qualitative and quantitative evaluation illustrated that 40% achieved their goal. Those who set goals regarding sleep showed statistical significance of success. The authors conclude completing a BCP is a valuable and effective exercise that enables medical students to practice the strategies and skills and experience the obstacles of changing health behavior.
