Tibetan Buddhism-Based ‘Compassion’ Training for Doctors Targets Burnout

This article in the Washington Post discusses the prevalence of a specific type of burnout called compassion fatigue and downstream effects to patient health. Cognitively based compassion training (CBCT) is a newfound combatant drawn from Tibetan Buddhism mind training offered to Emory School of Medicine students, trainees, and faculty. A similar program at Stanford Medicine combines traditional meditation practices with contemporary psychology and scientific research. Randomized control studies from both programs show significant improvement in all domains of compassion.
