The Prevalence of Alcohol Use Disorders Among American Surgeons

			The following study, published in JAMA Surgery, examined the prevalence of alcohol abuse and dependence among practicing surgeons. Members of the American College of Surgeons were invited to complete an anonymous survey electronically. The study found that 15.4% of surgeons met diagnostic criteria for alcohol abuse or dependence. Surgeons who were burned out and depressed were more likely to have alcohol abuse or dependence.
