The Impact of Duty-Hours Restrictions on Job Burnout in IM Residents: A Three-Institution Comparison Study
Type:
Peer-Reviewed Literature
The following study reports the impact of decreased work hours on burnout in IM residents when duty hour restrictions (DHRs) were implemented. Year-end prevalence of burnout and excessive Epworth sleepiness did not differ significantly for the cohort with decreased work hours. Overall, job burnout and self-reported sleepiness in IM resident physicians were unchanged after the 2011 DHRs at three academic institutions. The authors advise further investigations into determinants of burnout.
