The following perspective piece aims to share research results, clinical guidelines, and patient data around the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act. HITECH provided substantial resources to offset the cost of adopting and using EHRs for eligible hospitals and providers, support population health management with data, and develop a national infrastructure for health information exchange. Going forward, Health IT must make health information sharable between systems, allow patients to engage in shared decision making, and make the digital information they steward easily accessible to third-party developers to spur innovation in the technology marketplace.
