The Happy Docs Study: a Canadian Association of Interns and Residents Well-Being Survey examining Resident Physician Health and Satisfaction within and outside of Residency Training in Canada
The goal of “The Happy Docs Study” by Cohen et al. aims to increase knowledge of current stressors affecting residents’ health and gather information regarding well-being resources available to them using an unprecedented large sample size of resident physicians. The study found time pressure is the most significant factor associated with stress and intimidation and harassment (due to training status and gender) is experienced by a majority of residents. Eighteen percent of residents report their mental health as either “fair” or “poor”. The resources that most residents wished to have were career counseling and financial counseling. This study can serve as a basis for future research, advocacy and resource application for overall improvements.
