Self-Care Strategies for Nurses: A Psychoeducational Intervention for Stress Reduction and the Prevention of Burnout

Published in Applied Nursing Research, the following article gives details for a psycho-educational program that assists nurses to develop stress management plans that rely on the use of adaptive coping strategies. The intervention teaches positive self-care behaviors to nurses. Primary interventions include relaxation and guided imagery training, art exploration of proactive coping strategies, and creation of a personalized wellness plan. Post-intervention emotional exhaustion and depersonalization scores decreased, while personal accomplishment scores increased. There are opportunities for evolving the program so that more enduring change in self-care is generated.
