Resilience of Internal Medicine House Staff and its Association with Distress and Empathy in an Oncology Setting

Inpatient hematology-oncology is shown to produce vicarious trauma for physician trainees. The following study examines how physician distress and empathy influence patient care and resilience. The data illustrates resilience is negatively correlated with distress, but not with empathy or change in empathy throughout the rotation. More specifically, gender differences are further identified. Resident distress levels were in a clinically significant (76%) or post traumatic stress disorder range (17%), and resident empathy decreased during the rotation. Overall, this study provides evidence for the salutogenic effects of resilience.
