Report of the AMIA EHR-2020 Task Force on the Status and Future Direction of EHRs

Published in Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association (JAMIA), the article describes how the focus of the last decade of EHR innovation has involved capturing and sharing quality and cost data. While considerations of cost and efficiency are important, the central driver is patient safety and quality of care. To better resolve EHR issues, the multidisciplinary EHR-2020 Task Force makes ten recommendations spanning five areas: (1) simple, efficient documentation; (2) refocused regulation; (3) increased transparency and streamlined certification; (3) open-source innovation; (5) person-centered care.
