Reducing Burnout and Stress: The Effectiveness of Clinical Supervision

Published in the Community Practitioner, this paper aims to identify the effectiveness of a clinical supervision model to reduce burnout and stress for health visitor and school nurse leaders. Half-day training on restorative supervision contained elements of psychological support including listening, supporting and challenging the supervisee to improve their capacity to cope, especially in managing difficult and stressful situations. The intervention reduced health visitor and school nurse stress and burnout by 59% and 36% respectively. Compassion satisfaction was high, and could be a protective factor against participants’ experience of stress. The model can be cascaded easily and is therefore likely to be sustainable in organizations.
