Practice Is Protective: Mindfulness Training Promotes Cognitive Resilience in High-Stress Cohorts

This study, published in Mindfulness, investigates mindfulness training and its effect on cognitive resilience in high-stress cohorts. Two military cohorts were recruited during their high-stress pre-deployment interval. One group was given Mindfulness-based Mind Fitness Training (MMFT) while the other cohort was not. The Sustained Attention to Response Task (SART) was used to index objective attentional performance and subjective ratings of mind wandering before and after the Mindfulness-based Mind Fitness Training. Those that participated in mindfulness-based training had greater objective performance benefits and reduced subjective mind wandering than those who did not. The authors conclude that engaging in sufficient mindfulness-based training may protect against attentional lapses over high-demand intervals. While the study looked solely at military personnel, lessons could be learned and applied to practicing clinicians.
