Physician Well-Being: Addressing Downstream Effects, But Looking Upstream

The following article, published in JAMA Internal Medicine, evaluates the impact of a series of small-group discussions, on physicians’ psychological well-being. The intervention showed a substantial and sustained reduction in depersonalization, which is manifested as a sense of alienation from patients, and better scores on the Empowerment at Work Scale, which measures a sense of control, participation, and meaning. However, the findings also constitute a warning about the growing demoralization of physicians.
