Physician Nutrition and Cognition During Work Hours: Effect of a Nutrition-Based Intervention

The found links between nutrition and cognition inspired the authors of following paper to examine effects of a nutrition based intervention involving scheduled nutrition breaks during work on physician cognition, glucose, and hypoglycemic symptoms. The intervention improved cognition scores of speed and accuracy on both simple and complex reaction time tests. Mean glucose was lower and less variable alongside fewer reports of hypoglycemic type symptoms. A higher nutrient intake and improved hydration was also found. Overall, the authors posit workplace nutrition benefit not only the physicians but their patients and health care systems.
