Physician Burnout, Well-being, and Work Unit Safety Grades in Relationship to Reported Medical Errors

The following article, published by the Mayo Foundation, evaluates the associations among burnout, well-being measures, work unit safety grades, and medical errors. 6586 US physicians in active practice completed a survey regarding burnout, fatigue, and suicidal ideation. Results show that physicians reporting errors are more likely to have symptoms of burnout, fatigue, and recent suicidal ideation. Interventions to reduce rates of medical errors must address both physician well-being and work unit safety.
