Physician Burnout: Coaching a Way Out

In an effort to combat the adverse effects of healthcare environment changes, the following article poses information about the use of professional coaching and its well established benefits in other fields. Gazelle et al. inform that coaching is a results-oriented and stigma-free method to address burnout, by increasing one’s internal locus of control, enhancing self-awareness, drawing on individual strengths, questioning self-defeating thoughts and beliefs, examining new perspectives, and aligning personal values with professional duties. In this paper, the theoretical basis of coaching’s efficacy deriving from fields of positive psychology, mindfulness, and self-determination theory is buttressed with a case example.
