On-Call Work and Physicians’ Well-Being: Testing the Potential Mediators

This research in Canadian Journal of Respiratory Theory discovers techniques used by ICU clinicians to develop intuition and foresight at change of shift report (CoSR). ICU clinicians report that face-to-face communication at CoSR is necessary and reinforces interdependence, a common mental model, and shared peer expectations. Furthermore, expert ICU clinicians were found to share resilience features of anticipation, effective communication, listening, confirmation and the collaborative creation of patient safety. whereas the status quo training involves applying profession-specific knowledge, rules, facts, procedures and clinical guidelines, the research has implications for multidisciplinary work.
