Narrative Medicine as a Means of Training Medical Students Toward Residency Competencies

How does narrative medicine training influence perception of clinical skill development? The following study examines this relationship in fourth year medical students with a focus on ACHME and RCPSC mandated competencies in communication, collaboration, and professionalism. Five themes emerged: (1) developed and improved communication skills; (2-4) enhanced capacity to collaborate, empathize, and be patient-centered; (5) developed personally and professionally through reflection. The students report that narrative training reaps benefits, but is often misunderstood and perceived as counter-culture. The authors further contend that these skills are integral to medical practice, consistent with core competencies mandated by the ACGME/RCPSC, and difficult to teach.
