Mindfulness Training to Increase Resilience and Decrease Stress and Burnout in Ophthalmology Residents: a Pilot Study
The following pilot study assesses if Mindfulness practice decreases the stress and burnout in Ophthalmology residents in order to inform the design of a larger study. The findings suggest residents initially had more symptoms of exhaustion and normal range scores of stress and disengagement. The mindfulness based session improved stress and burnout scores. Thus, recommendations for the on-going larger study are shorter sessions and use of paper-based surveys with protected time for completion to aid in study participation. Overall, results support Mindfulness-based techniques as a means to decrease stress and burnout and enhancing resilience among physicians.
