Meeting the Imperative to Improve Physician Well-Being: Assessment Of An Innovation Program

This study, published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine, sought to assess the impact of a reproducible organizational intervention program with the aim of promoting physician well-being at a multi-site urban primary care group in Portland, Oregon. The program comprised 3 components: (1) leadership valuing physician well-being equal to quality of care and financial stewardship; (2) physicians identifying factors that influenced well-being, followed by plans for improvement with accountability; and (3) measuring the well-being of physicians regularly using validated instruments. Interventions were designed to increase physician control over their work environment, improve order in clinic functioning, and deepen the meaning physicians find in their work. Results indicated that the program enhanced physician and organizational well-being.
