Medscape National Physician Burnout & Depression Report 2018

More than 15,000 physicians from 29 specialties responded to Medscape’s annual Physician Lifestyle Report’s survey questions about burnout and depression. The survey seeks to understand how prevalent these factors are and how they affect physicians’ lives. Among physician respondents, 42% reported experiencing burnout and 15% reported experiencing either clinical or colloquial forms of depression. Over 56% of respondents named “too many bureaucratic tasks” as the primary contributing factor to burnout. Respondents noted the top solutions to reducing burnout as “increased compensation”, “more manageable work schedule”, and “decreased government regulations”.
