Increasing Oncologists’ Skills in Eliciting and Responding to Emotional Cues: Evaluation of a Communication Skills Training Program

In Psychooncology, Butow et al. develop a communication skills training (CST) program targeted psychological morbidity in cancer patients and evaluate its impact on doctor behaviour. The intervention improved (but not significantly) doctors’ display of a more creative environment and reduced doctors’ blocking behaviors. While the intervention was valued by physicians, no substantial reductions in stress and burnout were found. Overall, the short training programme demonstrated a positive effect on doctor behaviour. Moreover, the doctors advise video-conferencing after a short training course to effectively deliver CST.
