Impact of Protected Sleep Period for Internal Medicine Interns on Overnight Call on Depression, Burnout, and Empathy

This study examines whether pre-scheduled protected sleep periods during interns’ overnight calls improves end-of-rotation burnout, depression, and empathy scores. While no significant differences were found between groups in end-of-rotation emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal distress, amount of sleep while on-call significantly predicted lower scores on all three measures as well as a higher score on Perspective Taking. The authors infer that either protected time may not be directly related to these scores or it may have been too small to affect the emotional states.
