Healthcare Staff Wellbeing, Burnout, and Patient Safety: A Systematic Review

The following study, published in PLoS, sought to determine whether there is an association between health care professionals’ well-being and burnout, with patient safety. 46 studies were identified for the review. 16 of the 27 studies that measured wellbeing found a significant correlation between poor wellbeing in health care professionals and worse patient safety. 21 out of 30 studies that measured burnout found a significant association between burnout and patient safety. While this systematic review shows a correlation between burnout and lower patient safety, more studies are needed to determine causality.
