VanderWeele’s viewpoint article in the JAMA Network discusses the relationships between religious belief/participation and overall health outcomes. Possible mechanisms through which religious attendance decreases mortality rates and risk of depression/suicide are social integration, healthy behaviors, and an optimistic outlook. Additionally, the article reports findings of variation in behavior between religious and non-religious end-of-life patients. Lastly, there are differences in ecclesiastic priorities between patients and clinicians, particularly during the medical decision making process.
