Food for Thought: An Exploratory Study of how Physicians Experience Poor Workplace Nutrition

Published in BMC Nutrition Journal, this study explores physicians’ views of their nutrition in the workplace at a large urban teaching hospital. At the initial interview, physicians reported difficulty accessing adequate nutrition and linked it to emotional, physical, and cognitive symptoms. Moreover, practical barriers such as lack of time, inconvenient access, and poor food choices as well as a sense of professionalism and work ethic hindered their work nutrition practices. The intervention heightened their awareness of nutrition patterns and improved intentions to improve their workplace nutrition. The study concludes with a call for organizations to address identified practical and professional barriers.
