Emotional exhaustion and workarounds in acute care: cross sectional tests of a theoretical framework

Published in International Journal of Nursing Studies, a conceptual model is closely examined to link the clinical work environment with workarounds by clinicians, and hypothesizes that burnout, specifically emotional exhaustion, would mediate these relationships. Findings from structural modeling indicate, contrary to expectations, that physical environment was directly and negatively related to workarounds, potentially illustrating a risk factor for patient safety.
