Cultivating Mindfulness in Health Care Professionals: a Review of Empirical Studies of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)
Demands health care teams face including heavy caseloads, limited control over the work environment, long hours, and transitory organizational structures and systems have adverse consequences for clinicians and quality of care. Consequently, there exists an impetus for the development of curriculum aimed at fostering wellness and necessary self-care skills. The following review examines the potential benefits of mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) programs aimed at enhancing well-being. Empirical evidence indicates that participation in MBSR yields benefits in clinician physical and mental health. The authors conclude with conceptual and methodological limitations and suggestions for future research.
