Creating a Culture of Mindfulness in Medicine

Research identified that mindfulness increases well-being and promotes patient-centered orientation to clinical care. In this article, the authors develop and implement a systems level strategy to promote resilience and create a culture of mindfulness in health professions. The premise involves selecting 5 primary care leaders to promote mindfulness, fund their advanced mindfulness training, and foster collaborative planning and seed money for project implementation. Eight months after implementation, the four leaders fostered a variety of mindfulness activities benefiting colleagues, medical students, and patients across Wisconsin and beyond. The study identifies that the value of the outcomes superseded the input costs and expectations.
