Burnout and ‘Stress of Conscience’ Among Healthcare Personnel

The aim of this study is to examine the impact of moral strain on burnout. A model was developed using regression analysis explaining 59% of the variation in emotional exhaustion. Factors associated to emotional exhaustion and depersonalization are: ‘having to deaden one’s conscience’, and ‘stress of conscience’ from lacking the time to provide the care needed, not being able to live up to others’ expectations, etc. The analysis recommends attention to feelings of troubled conscience, opportunities for staff to reflect on their troubled conscience, and further research on ways to ease a troubled conscience in the working environment.
