Balint Groups as a Means to Increase Job Satisfaction and Prevent Burnout Among General Practitioners

The following study in Annals of Family Medicine explores experience of Balint group participation and its influence on work life among general practitioners. A significant influence was found on work life with the following interrelating themes: competence, professional identity, and a sense of security. The themes increased through parallel processes creating a base of endurance and satisfaction; thus, GPs were able to rediscover the joy of being a physician. The overall benefits of Balint group participation include improvements in patient-doctor relationships, improved ability to handle demanding work life and possible prevention of burnout. However, authors advise Balint groups may not suit all GPs and a multifaceted approach should be utilized.
