“Balint Group” Meetings for Oncology Residents as a Tool to Improve Therapeutic Communication Skills and Reduce Burnout Level
The following article in Journal of Cancer Education characterizes effectiveness of Balint group, an intervention method aimed at improving communication skills and strengthening doctor-patient relationships in medical training. The intervention involved oncology residents, guided by a senior oncologist and a clinical psychologist, meeting monthly to discuss personal cases from residents’ experiences. Burnout parameters, although initially higher at the beginning of the year, decreased slightly during the year in junior residents. The authors report that participation in a Balint group could improve communication abilities and contribute to feelings of self-accomplishment.
