Association of Intrinsic Motivating Factors and Markers of Physician Well-Being: A National Physician Survey
This article in Journal of General Internal Medicine aims to examine the association of intrinsic motivators with physicians’ career satisfaction, life satisfaction, and clinical commitment, while accounting for established extrinsic motivators as well. Strong positive associations were found between a sense of calling, high life meaning and commitment to direct patient care; personally rewarding hours per day, career satisfaction, life satisfaction, and commitment to clinical practice; long-term relationships with patients and career, life satisfaction, and high life meaning. Intrinsic motivators (such as a sense of calling) were associated with each measure of physician well-being (such as satisfaction, meaning, and commitment). However, extrinsic motivators (such as annual income) were not associated with meaning or commitment.
